It's still a frontier region that's more wilderness than civilization, dominated by 8,000-foot mountains, free-flowing rivers, and the Siberian taiga - an endless wilderness of northern forest.
Class III-IV rafting down Oka river in Sayan Mountains provides a good dose of adrenalin before an excursion to legendary Lake Baikal.
Itinerary:
Day 01. Arrive Irkutsk. Depart for 10 hour bus trip to the village Orlik. Camp on the river.
Day 02. Preparing for rafting. Start of rafting down the Sayan Oka river.
Days 3-4. Rafting down Sayan Oka River (class 3-4).
Day 05. A day of rest. Trekking to the mountains, fishing, sauna.
Days 6-7. Rafting down the river. Rapids class 2-4.
Day 08. End of rafting. Take out near the village of Verkhne-Okinsky. Bus to Irkutsk. Hotel accommodation.
Day 09. Lake Baikal
Transfer by bus to village Listvianka. Visiting Limnological museum. Tour by private boat on Lake Baikal. Overnight in tents on Sennaya Bay. The "glorious sea" of Lake Baikal is famous not only for its dimensions- over 400 miles long and more than a mile deep in places but also for its wildlife. Of the 1,800 species of animals and plants found here, more than 75% occur nowhere else, including the steppe eagle and the only freshwater seal in the world, the nerpa.
Day 10. Trekking to the village Bolshiye Koty along a picturesque path skirting Lake Baikal. Visiting the Biostation Museum. Return to the camp for the night.
Day 11. Trekking to Cape Skripper, which commands a breath-taking view of Baikal. Ascent to the height of 200 meters above sea level. Excursion to the ancient man's cave on Cape Skripper. Night ride by cutter to the settlement of Listvyanka. Bus trip to Irkutsk. Hotel.
Day 12. Depart from Irkutsk.
Cost: EURO 950, USD 1500 (min 8 pax). Payment: Deposit 100 EURO, final payment 30 days prior to departure.
